In the southeast of the Saarland lies the Bliesgau, a region that will make the hearts of nature lovers beat faster. Characterized by a mosaic of extensive orchard meadows, valuable beech forests, species-rich orchid meadows, and an impressive floodplain landscape traversed by the river Blies from which it gets its name, the gently rolling countryside is a sight to behold. The Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve not only preserves the traditional cultural landscape and the unique biodiversity of the region, but it is also heavily involved in climate protection and the establishment of regional value chains.
As a Quality Region for Hiking in Germany, the Bliesgau offers a variety of experiences on well-marked hiking trails for both experienced and sporty hikers, as well as families and leisure hikers. Visitors can experience nature up close on 94 carefully maintained hiking trails, 14 of which stand out as quality routes.
The 108 km long Bliessteig is particularly noteworthy, having been awarded the "Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe." It leads through the picturesque Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve over nine stages. Along the route, cultural sights, historical places, and lively nature invite exploration. The proximity to France adds a unique "savoir vivre" flair to the trail, which can be felt through friendly "Bonjour Bliesgau" greetings and French influences.
