The tour starts in the centre of Aschau between Gredwirt and Aschauerhof; follow the signposts for Pengelstein, 3 h and go up the path through meadows before continually heading up short sections in the forest. Forest trails are crossed several times, but continue following the signs for Pengelstein or Schwarzkogel.
The route runs continually uphill through the pasture area and past Kleinmoos Niederalm (1,624 m). The path (with some damp sections), crosses to the ruins of the Obere Kleinmoosalm & further on through a wide ditch up the Schwarzkogelscharte. It now continues in the direction of Pengelstein, through alpine roses and past small lakes (known as ‘Lacken’), to the first mountain stations of the ski lift and Pengelstein lake. The route leads along the mountain ridge via the little-marked peak of Pengelstein (3 hours from Aschau, refreshment stop available), across to the scenic Jufenalm. Keep following the signs for Ehrenbachhöhe and Hahnenkamm.
Now continue along the forest path and down to the Hochbrunn mountain guesthouse. When you get to the guesthouse, after following a section of the forest path, walk directly over the ski piste (steep tracks) as a shortcut. Bear left here continuing to Ehrenbachhöhe – after not even one hundred metres, take a left again heading up on the hiking trail to Ehrenbachhöhe. At the top get your bearings for Ehrenbachhöhensee and hike beneath the Fleckalmbahn to the reservoir right next to it. Behind the reservoir there is a short section through the pastures down to Bernhardkapelle. From Hochbrunn, proceed on the road, which has slight uphill and downhill sections, to the mountain station of the Hahnenkammbahn cable car (1,668 m, 1 hour 30 mins from Pengelstein). Here you can shorten the route and take the cable car straight to Kitzbühel. Those who still feel in good enough shape to continue walking should go past nearby Hocheckhütte and down through the skiing area in the direction of Seidlalm. You get to hike right along the famous Streif ski course here (Streif race route trail no. 26). Sections like Mausefalle, Steilhang and Hausbergkante are household names when it comes to skiing.
The route then leads to Seidlalmsee, which can be seen from all around. Here, take a short section back to the race route and go along this to Seidlalm (1,206 m). After Seidlalm, stay on the race route for a while and head for Lärchenschuss. Cross Lärchenschuss and follow the hiking trail through a short section of forest to Hausbergkante. The final big screen is located at Hausbergkante (on which you can follow skiers during a race). The descent runs from the Hausbergkante to the Ganslern slalom slope. The zig-zagging trail proceeds to Ganslernalm past the fastest section of the race route (where speeds of up to 140 km/h are achieved). Both finish areas are located in the golf course area at Rasmushof.
The trail now leads to the road Hausbergtal, follow this down into the valley and the signposts for Kitzbühel Hahnenkammbahn Valley Station (around 2 hours from Hahnenkamm mountain station). It is about 5 minutes from the valley station to the centre of Kitzbühel.
Note: You can take the cable car from the Hahnenkamm to Kitzbühel, and therefore save around two hours time on the descent. Please note the opening & operating hours of the respective cable cars!
