The tour starts just above the Annencafe, where you can park your car. A forest path leads you up to the Rastötzenalm. The path now goes left past the alpine huts up to the Schmalzscharte. In the past, food, such as lard, was transported from one valley to another via this saddle - hence the name of the saddle. From here, you hike along the mountain ridge to the Gamskarkogel, with a stopover at the Frauenkogel. The Frauenkogel is already part of the Grossarl mountains and offers a wonderful view of the neighbouring valley.
At 2,467 metres, the Gamskarkogel is the highest grass mountain in the Alps. There is a mountain hut right on the summit, built in 1828, making it the oldest mountain hut in the Alps. The Styrian hereditary prince Archduke Johann had the hut built and was himself a welcome regular guest.
