The Dr.-Josef-Mehrl-Hütte can be reached via Bundschuh by taxi or your own car. From the car park (bus stop), walk 200 m in the direction of Innerkrems until the signposts to Königstuhl branch off to the left. Along a marked farm track you reach the farmed Eßlalm. After about 0:30 h you leave the path in front of the Rosaninalm and follow a steeper hiking trail into the valley. Cross a high plateau to reach the Rosaninsee lake (2,080 m), then over stony terrain up to the mountain ridge. In approx. 0:30 h you reach the 2,336 m high Königstuhl via serpentines im high Königstuhl with a hiking stamp and impressive views.
For the descent, follow the ascent route to the signpost below the Königstuhl. From here you can return to the Dr.-Josef-Mehrl-Hütte or hike via Friesenhalshöhe (2,246 m), Seenock (2,260 m) and Vogelsangberg. The red-white-red markings lead via Saueregg- and Stubennock (2,240 m) to a steep descent. Passing relics of the former iron mining industry, you finally return to the hut through a small forest.
